Rumors of losing a race weekend has businesses near speedway nervous
Charlotte Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith says a report about a possible move of one of the track's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races is false. Smith said Tuesday that no final decision has been made, but with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, the thought of the race leaving the speedway made many nervous.

Charlotte Bobcats chairman Michael Jordan: team will change name to Hornets
Charlotte Bobcats chairman Michael Jordan announced that the team will change its name and become the Hornets once again. The team will officially become the Charlotte Hornets for the 2014-2015 season.

QB Mitchell decides on North Carolina State
Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Mitchell says he is transferring to North Carolina State to play his final season. Mitchell was granted his release from the Razorbacks earlier this month, following a spring competition for the starting position that ended with the senior listed as the second-team quarterback to sophomore Brandon Allen.

Winston-Salem City Council approves coliseum sale to Wake Forest
After about three-years of negotiations, the Winston-Salem City Council on Monday voted 5-2, approving the sale of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to Wake Forest University. The council also unanimously approved an intent to sell Bowman Gray Stadium to Winston-Salem State University.

Charlotte basketball fans excited about possibility of return to Hornets name
The Charlotte Bobcats will hold a news conference Tuesday evening, where the team is expected to announce it is bringing the Hornets nickname back to the city. Former point guard Muggsy Bogues, arguably the most recognizable person to ever put on a Hornets jersey, said bringing the nickname back to Charlotte is a good move.

UNC's Moran named ACC baseball player of year
North Carolina third baseman Colin Moran is the Atlantic Coast Conference's player of the year and teammate Kent Emanuel is its pitcher of the year. Moran leads the nation with 83 RBIs and hit .376 while becoming the seventh UNC player to win the ACC award.

Eric Staal suffers injury after knee-on-knee hit in World Championships
Competing for Team Canada against Sweden in the World Championships, Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal suffered a knee injury after colliding with Alexander Edler in the first period. Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford said Staal is scheduled to have an MRI on Friday.

Top prep prospect Andrew Wiggins to attend Kansas
Top basketball prospect Andrew Wiggins is headed to Kansas. Wiggins signed a letter-of-intent with the Jayhawks at a private ceremony Tuesday afternoon in Huntington. He previously narrowed his choices to Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State.

Duke's Hairston has right thumb surgery
Duke says rising senior Josh Hairston will miss 6-8 weeks of offseason work while he recovers from thumb surgery. The school said Hairston had surgery Tuesday to repair ligament damage in his right thumb. He injured his thumb during practice in February but did not miss any time in games.

NASCAR suspends 2 for failing random drug tests
One of the two suspensions issued Tuesday was to Lee Dodson, a mechanic on Clint Bowyer's car. Michael Waltrip Racing fired Dodson upon learning he'd failed a drug test. The other suspension was issued to Frank Earnhardt, who NASCAR identified only as a crew member for a Nationwide Series team.

Panthers release DE Keiser, OL Williams
Thomas Keiser made the Panthers roster as an undrafted rookie in 2011 out of Stanford and contributed right away with 13 tackles and four sacks in eight games. However, shoulder problems limited him to four games last season. Zach Williams was Carolina's sixth round draft pick in 2011 but only played in one game in two seasons.

Campers begin arriving in Concord for two weeks of racing
Thousands of race fans will descend on Charlotte Motor Speedway this week. The campgrounds opened Sunday and some people were already moving in for race week. Speedway officials expect 15,000 to 20,000 campers to show up for race week.

Kenseth passes Busch for 1st Darlington victory
Matt Kenseth passed his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch with 13 laps to go to win his first Southern 500 on Saturday night. Busch was the strongest car for much of the race and led for 265 of the 367 laps at Darlington Raceway.

Ervin wins chaotic 50 free with impressive time
Two-time Olympian Anthony Ervin has won the 50-meter freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte. Ervin took the one-lap dash with a blistering in-season time of 22.01 seconds Saturday night, beating a field that included fellow Olympians Cullen Jones, Tyler McGill, Ricky Berens and Britain's Adam Brown.
