The Wake County School Board has narrowed its list of superintendent candidates down to just three finalists. The announcement came on Tuesday. The finalists are Dana Bedden, Ann Clark, and James Merrill.

Closing arguments are expected to begin Tuesday in the Mario McNeill murder trial. He is accused of raping and killing 5-year-old Shaniya Davis in 2009. People who knew and worked with former State Representative Stephen LaRoque took the stand Tuesday as Federal Prosecutors continued to try to prove he stole money from nonprofit organizations. LaRoque is facing several charges including theft specifically with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a non-profit organization he created.

Charlotte Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith says a report about a possible move of one of the track's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races is false. Smith said Tuesday that no final decision has been made, but with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, the thought of the race leaving the speedway made many nervous.

The North Carolina office that oversees Medicaid says the funding shortfall for the government health insurance program is more than $330 million. Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos said Tuesday the shortfall has grown $85 million above the $248 million projected by Gov. Pat McCrory's administration earlier this month.

Mecklenburg County is celebrating its sestercentennial. It was 250 years ago the county declared its independence from Great Britain, a year before the rest of the country. This day also marks the 50th anniversary of a Civil Rights march demanding desegregation. This week, Charlotte area planners are scheduled to give final approval to widen Interstate 77 with HOT lanes between the Queen City and Mooresville. High Occupancy Toll lanes allow drivers to pay to use the lanes to avoid congestion, and the amount depends on traffic. Carpools of three or more people can use the lanes for free.
