The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there could be an above average hurricane season this year. NOAA's predictions, released Thursday, call for up to 20 named storms with six to 11 hurricanes. The organization expects at least three to be major.

Garrett Weaver, a 23-year-old Camp Lejeune Marine, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Thursday and will spend at least 16 months in prison. Investigators say 27-year-old Myrna Gabriel-Parks was killed in 2011 after Weaver ran a red light at Bell Fork Road and Hargett Street.

A man who escaped from a work release program in Lincolnton is now in custody in South Carolina. Authorities say Ronald Billings was arrested Thursday night in Conway. Billings was serving a seven-year sentence for breaking and entering, forgery and other property crimes.
