MOORESVILLE — As students are settling in to another school year, some parents in Mooresville are taking on new roles.

Pine Lake Preparatory, a Mooresville charter school, now has its first Parent-Teacher Organization and the founders say the support is overwhelming. For Briggs Cook, starting an official Parent Teacher Organization is a monumental task but one well worth the effort.

"It became a need for Pine Lake because of volunteerism from the parents," said Cook.

Pine Lake Prep opened its doors in 2006. But this year, with a new 'Head of Schools' and an aggressive group of parents, some thought it was the perfect time to fill a void.

"I think the PTO serves a distinct purpose and brings parents and teachers and students together for one good cause. It really can be the backbone of a school," said Chris Terrill.

An overwhelming amount of parents showed up to the first meeting since school started. Which to Cook proves that parents want to pitch in, but just needed an avenue to do so.

“I think one of the best ways you can be engaged with your child is to be involved at school," said Cook.

Rebekah Miller said they already have a long list of goals for the new year; mostly fundraising goals that she said need to be met to make up for a gap in state and private funding.

"Just the typical things, things that most people would take for granted that maybe in a Charlotte-Mecklenburg school or an Iredell County school are already paid for or just hanging on the walls when the school opens but the way that we're funded, that doesn't always happen," said Miller.

But with so many parents lining up to get on board, the brand new Pink Lake Prep parent-teacher organization has high hopes of making a difference.
