Your Home: Window replacements

This week on "Your Home," whether you're looking to sell or buy a new home, one of the lines that will always standout in the listing is replacement windows.

"99 percent of the marketplace has gone to an all vinyl window. Most people are looking for the maintenance free aspect of a replacement window. People want to get away from the wood windows for the reason that they have to be stained, painted and maintained," said
Dominic Tocco, Comfort Windows Project Manager.

If the cost of replacing every window in your home gives you pause, know that you don't have to replace them all at the same time and there are windows to fit every budget.

"There are things that are inexpensive in the marketplace and things that can be quite expensive. Anything from double-hungs to casements to hoppers. Picture windows, bow windows, bay windows. It's endless," said Tocco.

Not only do replacement windows look great and they're a big advantage come resale time, but the biggest benefit is their energy efficiency and the dollars you'll see come off your utility bill.

"The big factors now are that they're dual pane, low E, argon gas filled. Now triple pane glass and krypton gas are also available in the marketplace. What the gas is doing inside the window is basically stopping the bad or ultraviolet rays from coming inside the home. It prevents an air barrier in between the panes of glass making it more energy efficient," said Tocco.

Tocco also reminds us to always look for the energy star seal of approval when choosing new windows. Look for a company with a proven track record and ask for references.
