CHARLOTTE – The North Carolina Air National Guard's 145th Airlift Wing is set to return to firefighting duty six weeks after the plane crash that killed four airmen.

Sixteen airmen and two aircraft will leave for Boise on Monday morning. The mission is expected to run through Sept. 4.

The firefighting aircraft crashed in South Dakota on July 1, killing Lt. Col. Paul Mikeal, Maj. Joseph McCormick, Maj. Ryan David and Senior Master Sgt. Robert Cannon. Two other airmen were seriously hurt.

The wing's operations group commander, Col. Roger Williams says the airmen departing Monday will carry the memory of the fellow fallen airmen in their hearts.
