HIGH POINT — Guilford County students continue to improve on an annual basis.

Tuesday, school system leaders announced graduation rates reached a four year high at nearly 85 percent, and combined test scores have improved overall by nearly 1.5 percent. A new technology initiative, coupled with strong teachers and staff, is leading the way for future improvements.

For example, one year ago Montlieu Academy students received new iPads.

"The technology allows students to go on virtual field trips beyond the textbook. To bring the outside world and all its wonders, all the outside information out there into the classroom," said Montlieu Academy principal Ged O'Donnell.

School system leaders say some of their biggest challenges for the future lie in improving student literacy and closing the achievement gap.
