CARY — Lines have been out the door this week at the Wake County School System headquarters, as parents continue to register their students for the upcoming school year.

With year-round students back in class and those on a traditional calendar starting in August, parents must now go to the central office in Cary to sign up. This is the first year the school system is implementing the student assignment plan.

The plan is aimed at giving parents a say in where their children attend; leaving some who are new to the area confused.

"Honestly, it's been a nightmare having to wait for everyone. Getting the paperwork done and then having to wait to stand in line," said parent Tasha Mason.

The Crites family moved to the area from Texas, and are slowly getting used to the new system.

"We just went to our neighborhood school thinking we would take care of everything there and then they sent us here.  We had to find it and now we're just waiting," said parent Patricia Crites.

Long registration lines mixed with uncertainty toward the system's new choice plan has left lingering headaches for Mason. However, despite concerns that come with attending a new school, some remain optimistic about what their future assignment could bring.

"We're hoping they have openings in the schools we've chosen.  We're hoping for Brier Creek," said Crites.

Last month the school board voted to change the student assignment plan again for the 2013 school year. The traditional school year starts August 27. School officials ask you print and fill out the required paperwork in advance to help speed up registration.
