CHARLOTTE — North Carolina's Air National Guard will help with rescue efforts in Colorado.

Saturday morning, Charlotte based 145th Airlift Wing sent two aircraft to Colorado to help with the state's largest wildfire in history. The C-130 planes are equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS). Officials say each plane can release up to 3,000 gallons of water or retardant per drop.

A team of 30 airmen are helping in the effort.

"We've been watching the news and everything and we've just been waiting for the call and as soon as we got it, we were ready to go," said Lt. Colonel Paul Mikeal.

The cost of the mission will be reimbursed by the federal government.
