Unemployment rate rises in 76 NC counties in May

RALEIGH -- Unemployment rates rose in 76 North Carolina counties in May. According to the Department of Commerce, the average rate in the state rose to 9.4 percent, one of the highest in the nation.


In Mecklenburg County, the rate rose from 9 percent in April to 9.6 percent. In Wake County, the unemployment rate increased to 7.5 percent from 7.3 percent.


On the coast, unemployment rose from 8.6 percent to 9 percent in New Hanover County. And, in the Triad, the rate increased .4 percent to 9.5 percent in Guilford County.
