COLFAX, N.C. -- Many neighbors like Garland Stack who live near the proposed Airport High School say the spot is simply not the right choice.

"You're looking at to me, almost an impossible situation especially in the mornings and afternoons. It's a total box of problems that's just not objective, and it's not serving the western part of the county and it's more costly and it's unsafe," Stack said.

Guilford County School representatives met with neighbors Tuesday to discuss some of their concerns, that include the location inside an industrial park, traffic, and the state DOT's report that cited poor residential connectivity and improper safety entrance and exits.

"Placement of the truck is not safe, and that it would be better served to be between here and [N.C.] 68, so that your kid and your bus driver can get to it," Stack said.

But the school system said the designs are preliminary and that changes can be made and believe the land is ideal for the schools.

"It's a very good location, it's an ideal location, and very often it's the location, it's the best location we've been able to find for these schools," said Guilford County Chief Operating Officer Andrew LaRowe.

Two weeks ago, the Kernersville Planning Board unanimously voted to deny a request for rezoning, moving one step closer to blocking the build.

And before the schools can be built in an industrial zone annexation must be approved by the Kernersville Board of Alderman. Some city officials said the move would hinder future business opportunities.

"These are the factors that together, should mean that objectively this school board should begin it's search for a real best location for this school," Stack said.

"We're not certain that the ideas that are coming forth right now are the ones that we would agree with," LaRowe added.

The Kernersville Board of Alderman will hold a public hearing on June 5 and likely vote on the rezoning request.

The project is being funded by 2008 school bonds. If denied annexation the board will have to meet and decide how to move forward with the project.
