RALEIGH (AP) -- People who want to take the politics out of the age-old process of drawing congressional and legislative districts every decade is pushing their plans at the capitol.
The North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying and Government Reform says a bi-partisan group will be at the Legislature on Tuesday.
The group wants the state Senate to pass legislation that would direct the General Assembly's non-partisan professional staff to redraw legislative and congressional districts instead of lawmakers.
The state House last year overwhelmingly approved the measure last year.
The bill would direct the General Assembly's Legislative Service Office to draw the maps behind closed doors without partisan influence and following certain redistricting principles. Lawmakers could take over the process if they reject the first three plans.
