Here's a way to put a little competition into your kid's summer reading. The Scholastic Reading Timer App is an interactive stopwatch that keeps track of how many minutes each week your child hits the books.

It also connects to the Scholastic Summer Challenge, which runs from May 1 to Aug. 31, and lets kids log their minutes to win virtual rewards, and compete with their school to read for the world record.

It's also great for parents. They can check children’s reading activity and browse daily tips, articles and book lists.
