Twitter measures political sentiment as election nears

Twitter developed a new way to gauge how its users feel about President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Their tool? The Twitter Political Index.

It evaluates and weighs the sentiment of tweets mentioning Obama or Romney. With fewer people picking up the phone for polling surveys, twitter hopes the index will help supplement traditional ways of measuring public opinion.

They plan to post the latest Twitter Political Index each day at 8 p.m.
