CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- Carolina Beach resident Kim Munley is known as the hero who took down the Fort Hood shooter in November of 2009. Now, three years later, she and her fiance were given the gift of a dream wedding provided by Operation Marry Me Military.

She's a national hero. He's one of our nation's veterans. But on Sunday, Veterans Day, Munley and Brandon Meredith took on different roles, bride and groom.

"It's the best day to get married," Munley said. "Especially if you support the military or are military. By far, I couldn't pick another day."

Operation Marry Me Military works with local vendors to provide picture perfect nuptials to service members free of charge.

"Everything is donated," said Alecia Geddings, the head of the organization. "Everything has been donated, time, services. The total value is over $120,000 when it's all said and done."

Brandon Munley said of their submission wasn't an easy task. "We had to write a letter explaining why we would like this wedding and everything. We just submitted it and I came home, and I heard we won."

But one thing that was not in their submission letter was Kim's act of bravery that saved many Fort Hood soldiers three years ago.

"Kim Munley was actually credited with helping take down the Fort Hood shooter," Geddings said.

But Kim said she wanted to the submission to be about Brandon, who was still active duty at the time, and not her. "I'm not active duty any more, so I'd rather focus on his accomplishments, being in the military," she said.

From a choir singing the national anthem to a color guard presenting the flag during their ceremony, Kim and Brandon's love of country was evident. As for their love for each other, one look, one smile, one kiss said it all.

"We're just going to live happily ever after," Brandon said with a smile.

Instead of providing wedding favors to their guests, the couple made a donation to Step Up for Soldiers, a group that helps disabled veterans get back on their feet.
