WILMINGTON—A close race for North Carolina's seventh district congressional seat could be headed to a recount.

On election night Democratic incumbent Mike McIntyre was ahead of Republican challenger David Rouzer by 507 votes. Yet there are over 8,000 provisional ballots that need to be examined and absentee ballots have until Friday to be mailed in.

Once of the votes have been counted if the difference between the candidates remains at 1 percent or less there could be a recount. Executive Director of the NC Board of Elections Gary Bartlett said the recount process is not automatic.

"The runner up who is eligible must request the recount or it will not happen,” said Bartlett.

UNC Wilmington American politics lecturer Aaron King said the outcome of the race has an impact on North Carolinians but it will not affect the balance of power in Washington.

"Regardless of this election the Republicans will still have control of the House and the Democrats will still have control in the Senate so we're in for another few years of divided government anyways,” said King.

Rouzer's campaign said they will wait until all the ballots are counted before they make a decision on a recount. Candidates have until Nov. 20 to ask for a recount.
