RALEIGH (AP) -- North Carolina State freshman guard Rodney Purvis has received clearance to play this year.

The school said Monday the NCAA's Committee on Initial Eligibility Waivers granted permission for Purvis to play for his hometown program. The NCAA took an extended look at Purvis' eligibility because his class was first to graduate from Raleigh's Upper Room, causing Purvis to miss an exhibition trip to Spain in August.

The committee had allowed Purvis only to attend classes and practice before the school appealed.

The McDonald's All-American was also The Associated Press men's player of the year for North Carolina. He's part of a touted recruiting class for a team hoping to contend for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

Purvis said in a statement he's "looking forward to focusing on school and basketball.''
