WILMINGTON — Wilmington-area Kangaroo Express gas stations joined forces for a military fundraising effort Friday.

The fundraiser is part of the Salute Our Troops campaign. Officials say the gas stations are raising money for the NC National Guard, the United Service Organizations and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Some say it is a good way to support those who sacrifice their lives to preserve our nation's freedom.

"The least we can do is take care of them while they are deployed, while they are away. They do so much for us. It's time that we give back for them," said Staff Sgt. Tommy Rieman.

Last year the campaign raised $2.5 million.
