BEAUFORT, N.C. -- Pirates took over Beaufort on Friday with a parade down Front Street, where they raised the jolly roger to the delight of a huge crowd.

Children and adults alike joined in the festivities by dressing up as pirates.

Professional pirate captain Jim Light says festivals like the pirate invasion are why he dons the the pirate persona.

"I love meeting the people. Going about all different towns and good places like Beaufort and meeting all the good people. Showing them a good time and trying to give them a little but of magic, mystery and pirate history," said Light.

This is the 5th year of the Beaufort Pirate Invasion and area businesses love it because it also brings an invasion of visitors.

Owner of the Beaufort Trading Company Doris Carlin says she starts planning in January for the invasion.

"This is the best weekend that we have here in Beaufort as far as tourists coming in.  There's at least, I think last year was 5,000 people a day. It's fabulous. It's great for families. The children love it," said Carlin.

The Beaufort Pirate Invasion continues on Saturday with a pirate attack by sea beginning at 10:00 a.m. and festivities continue all day, culminating with free live music on the waterfront from 7:00 p.m. Until 10:00 p.m.
