WILMINGTON, N.C.--Some New Hanover County girls spent the week building bonds with Wilmington Police officers.
The department's annual "cop camp" gives rising fourth and fifth graders the chance to explore popular attractions in the Wilmington area while getting to know officers on a more personal level.
Many of the girls said future campers should not be intimidated by the officers and instead expect to have plenty of fun.
"You are going to have a lot of fun," said camper Shameka Richardson. "You are going to exercise a lot, eat really healthy, and don't be worried that someone is going to arrest you."
A cop camp for boys was also held last month.
Chief Ralph Evangelous recently credited outreach programs like the camp as part of the continued efforts by the department to drive crime incidents down.
