Florida lifeguard fired for rescuing swimmer honored, receives city key

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A Florida lifeguard who was fired for rescuing a swimmer outside of his zone was presented a key to the city of Hallandale Beach on Monday.

21-year-old Tomas Lopez received a standing ovation. Six other lifeguards were given a standing ovation as well for quitting or being fired in support of Lopez.

Lopez was offered his job back, but refused to take it.
