OAK ISLAND, N.C.--Authorities continue to investigate a helicopter crash in Oak Island. The helicopter went down around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, less than mile off shore near the Oak Island Pier. Officials say passengers Will Mistrot and Marty Kojimoto were the only people on board and escaped with minor injuries.
A nearby boat came to their rescue and assisted until the Coast Guard arrived. Witnesses on the beach said they were stunned.
Cass Safrit, a crash witness said, "People were in awe, sitting on the beach. I mean, we are kinda helpless sitting on the beach."
Safrit said he saw a nearby boat that immediately went to the rescue of the two passengers as soon as the crash occurred.
Officials have not confirmed a cause for the crash. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident, but the cause of the accident will be determined by the National Transportation Safety Board.
