JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- Parents cheered as the Onslow County School Board voted not to draw new district lines for the next school year. About 100 people attended Tuesday night's school board meeting.

The board considered several plans to ease over crowding at Richlands High, Trexler Middle and Carolina Forest Elementary Schools. Board members cited the overwhelming community response as one factor in the "no" vote. The looming force reduction in the Marine Corps was another reason.

Chairman Pam Thomas says they are still working to address overcrowding.

"To go forward with all of the data that we have and develop a five-year plan of how we can phase in a redistricting plan that will be beneficial to all of the students," she said.

The redistricting options would have affected hundreds of students in the county. Richlands High School is the most overcrowded in the county. Enrollment is 210 students over optimal capacity.
