BEAUFORT, N.C. – Cake, banners and balloons – that's how Beaufort celebrated its win for "The 2012 Coolest Small Town in America" contest.

Crowds gathered at the town hall Friday to commemorate the victory.

Beaufort is, however, sharing the first place title with Hammondsport, NY.

Budget Travel Magazine's contest was declared a tie because voting crashed the company's website.

Town officials said it a win for Beaufort but also North Carolina because they received support statewide.

"It's been amazing. I've had call after call congratulating saying we deserved it and well, we're just tickled,” said Mayor Richard Stanley.

In all, more than 300,00 votes were cast.
