WILSON — Some North Carolina residents and businesses have been switching to natural gas because of lower rates.

The U.S. government said prices dropped on Thursday because supplies are well above what is normal for this time of year. For Piedmont Natural Gas, rates have decreased over 22 percent during winter months over the past two years.

"The number of our conversion customers, that is, the number of customers that are switching form one source to another. We've seen an uptake in that over the last two or three years so that's certainly a good trend," said Piedmont Natural Gas spokesperson David Trusty.

Residents are happy to be making the switch from propane or electric.

"We're excited, because I'll be getting with the Rinnai System. I'll have very affordable hot water," said Wilson resident Glenna Lamphere.

The N.C. Utilities Commission says some gas companies offer financing and rebate opportunities.
