WILMINGTON – After months of planning and coordination between two schools, more than 30 students will help take learning to a new level at Cape Fear Community College.

The first classes leading to bachelor's degrees in business administration or elementary education started Tuesday.

The community college partnered with North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount to make the degree programs possible.

Each class is offered one night a week for eight weeks with a mix of classroom and online work. The schedule is designed to help students attend full-time, but still work.

Katie Ferrell is the Education Coordinator but also has the side job of being a motivator.

"I just tell them it's like riding a bike, once you get back on you just really pick it up quickly and you are just excited to start," said Ferrell.

Students like Steven Herrera will be among the first group to get a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan College while at CFCC.

"When you get your associate's, even though it still feels gratifying, you kind of always have that missing two years that you want to complete. So this feels really good," said Herrera.

For Steven these classes will lead him into a career in elementary education. It was a pretty east transition as nearly all of his classes transferred.

"And I think 64 hours transferred in, which is more than I expected," said Herrera.

More than 60 students are already going through enrollment. The next term starts in early March.
