RALEIGH -- An age-old tradition for New Year's is boosting the local economy. This week, the North Carolina Farmer's Market has been busy with shoppers buying up collard greens and black eyed peas for their first meal of the new year. Local farmers say the surge in business has them seeing green.

"I think some people like the nostalgia of it all, maybe going back to the way things used to be especially during hard economic times," said Gary Wise of Wise Farms.

One vendor said he sold 30 boxes of collards in just one day alone.
