CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. -- A Craven County man is lucky to be alive after a fire destroyed his home Friday night. Witnesses say the fire started around 9:30 p.m. and spread quickly across many structures on the property located at 6330 Highway 70 west of Havelock.
Rick Smith was home during the blaze and was treated and released for smoke inhalation.
Smith's brother-in-law Monty Campbell was helping pick up the property Saturday morning and says it could have been much worse.
"He made probably one to many trips in to get stuff out and got a little smoke but everybody's doing great this morning," he said. "[I'm] just thankful that we're all still here."
Neighbor Kimberly Gillen says the flames reached over 30 feet into the air and small propane tanks exploded in the fire.
"They told us we were evacuated out of our home," she said. "We had to grab our kids. There were chickens running around on fire. It was a bad sight. I won't get that out of my mind."
Crews from the Township 6, Havelock, and Harlowe fire departments responded to the fire.
There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
