WILMINGTON -- Managers of our state ports want to install surveillance gear along more than 20 miles of the Cape Fear River leading into Wilmington. The state ports plan to mount as many as 50 cameras along the river to monitor ship traffic coming in.
The cameras are designed to prevent and improve the response to attacks from conventional, chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. But, a ports authority spokeswoman says it could be years before the cameras are functional.
A $2 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security is funding the project.
