EMERALD ISLE — Increased measures to control Emerald Isle's deer population start in the new year.

This year, the Board of Commissioners approved additional places where hunters can use bows to hunt deer. That includes the Emerald Isle Woods Park and other large private properties in the Coast Guard Road area.

Officials say the population is higher than ever. Town-approved hunters can use bows to hunt deer in January and February.

The town manager said the hunt will be similar to the one the town allowed two years ago. There will not be any open deer season for the general public.
