WILMINGTON—The organization Step Up for Soldiers plans to make one U.S. Army Captain's dream come true by building a custom made workout facility.

Captain Ivan Castro was blinded during an attack while he was serving in Iraq in 2006, but remains an active duty special forces recruiter at Fort Bragg. Staying physically fit is a top priority but he admits it is tough relying on others to take him to a gym.

Step Up for Soldiers has been collecting money to build a gym on his property. Castro said he would open the space to other wounded warriors.

"It's somewhere that would be a therapy for wounded service members and their families and people in the community to come on in and blow off some steam," said Capt. Castro.

In the last four years, Castro has completed 10 half-marathons, 20 full marathons, and two 50-mile races. His next goal is to tackle the Iron Man triathlon.

Step Up for Soldiers said they are $10,000 short of their fundraising goal for the workout facility. Anyone who would like to donate, visit the Step Up for Soldiers website.
