MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — Thousands of people lined the streets in downtown Morehead City to support their past and present service members during the town's Annual Veterans Day Parade .
Visit North Carolina lists the parade as the largest one in the state. Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Charles Verret showed his granddaughter Rhiley the float he is riding in the parade. Verret said he is proud to be honoring his fellow veterans
"We put a lot of time and effort into defending and supporting the constitution and this is a day where we get together with all our brother and sister services and just share at one time and one place, a sense of fellowship with our veterans," said Verret
Crowds waved flags as a sea of bagpipe players marched through downtown. Whether people were in the parade or on the sidelines, patriotism could be spotted everywhere.
"Troops need to know that we support them and they've got somebody back here that has their back and are for them too. So they're not in it alone," said Morehead City Resident Lee Collier.
Others were just as proud.
"Freedom is worth fighting for. I'm very proud to be an American and this is one way I can show that pride by honoring our military," said Morehead City resident Nelson Hopkins.
Verret said he hopes the parade teaches his granddaughter the importance of being part of a united nation.
"I think it's important that we all connect. It's a sense of community, it's a sense of sharing, a responsibility to the community," said Verret.
The official Veteran's Day holiday is Nov. 11.
