HAMPSTEAD, N.C. – When disasters like Hurricane Irene strike they leave their mark on the community but now organizations like the Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry, or WARM, are proving help doesn't have to be far away.
WARM started 15 years after Hurricane Bertha and Fran hit and it continues to bring hope to low-income families.
Hampstead resident David Dunbar used to have to walk down the stairs backward, pulling his walker along with him. Dunbar is blind and his new ramp is a gift from WARM.
They've helped complete more than 500 homes and that list continues to grow every day, especially after Hurricane Irene. The organizations top priority is safety. Dunbar said he didn't have a safe way out of his home and he is grateful.
"Free, I really felt freedom and being blessed by God and these people,' said Dunbar.
WARM works with individuals, organizations and businesses in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender Counties.
