PENDER COUNTY, N.C. — A group of dogs are getting a new opportunity for life.

It is part of the Pender County correctional facility's annual adoption program. Inmates personally train the animals and release them to adopted parents. Afterward, the inmates get a chance to catch up on old times with the dogs they trained.

"Our job is to bring them in and re-acclimate them to what it means to be a part of a family. We teach them basic obedience as well as how to be a good pet. We teach them manners around the house and how to walk on a good leash again," said Inmate dog trainer David Shimp.

The program was established three years ago.
