CAROLINA BEACH -- Baby turtles made their way to the sea over the weekend. This was the first hatching of the season for the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project. The nests keep coming as one more was found on Tuesday night.

There are a total of seven nests so far in Carolina Beach and nine in Kure Beach. Volunteers said they have seen problems with dogs and other animals trying to get into the nests so this year they changed the way they are protecting them and added a mesh lining over the nest.

The volunteers remind those on the beach that these are a threatened and endangered species and to leave the nests alone.

"When people see the sign they should just admire the nest and not get to close to it and definitely not tamper with the eggs or tamper with a nesting turtle. That is an offense as well," said Nancy Busovne with the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project.

Officials with the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project said they will continue to patrol for new nests until Aug. 31. All nests are expected to hatch before early October.
