RALEIGH – Broughton High School students get down and dirty this week to learn about homegrown healthy foods. It's part of a summer workshop series hosted by the Wade Edwards learning lab.
Chefs and nutritionists take students to the inter-faith food shuttle farm and local farmer's markets to teach healthy eating habits. The students receive credit for community service.
Organizers say it's a "win-win" for everyone.
"So that's sort of our goal, to combat childhood obesity,” said organizer Catherine Andrew. “That's a problem in our low income areas where children don't have access to healthy foods. We're teaching kids how they can be apart of the solution."
Tuesday, the students prepared food packages for senior citizens.
