WILMINGTON β An American hero gets the money he needs to live the American dream. The "Homes for Heroes" program launched in the Wilmington region by helping 25-year Air Force veteran Gleen Alford and his family buy their first home.
The non-profit offers large savings to community heroes like military members, police officers, firefighters and teachers who are buying or selling a house.
After renting houses for a couple decades, Alford says looks forward to having a place to call home.
"You're living in somebody else's house and you see all the problems in that house and you can't wait to get your own and its finally happened,β said Alford. βIt really is. People talk about this is the greatest day of my life and it ranks up there. It is one of the greatest days."
This year, the program hopes to help 20-25 heroes get a home.
