TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will begin a federal investigation Jan. 1 into a series of pelicans deaths.
Workers at the Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary are treating the animals. Officials there say they've found more than 150 dead pelicans during the last month. They found four more Tuesday and say the injuries are becoming more serious.
They're finding birds with broken necks and some that have been decapitated, shot and cut. The bodies are being sent for further testing.
