WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. – The Olympics came to the coast Sunday, but with a new twist.
Twenty-five teams from hospitality and tourism businesses throughout the Cape Fear region competed in eight hospitality-themed games.
But this event is about more than just fun games – all these participants are working on their team-building skills.
"This is fun. You get to meet a lot of different people, good bonding time. Get to meet different contacts from different restaurants. I think we should do it every year," said Eric Moreira, with the Holiday Inn Sunspree.
The event also raised scholarship funds for students at Cape Fear Community College.
"All the money raised today will go toward scholarships at our local community college in the hospitality industry, in management, in culinary, in all fields," said Mary Baggett-Martin, of the Blockade Runner.
The Wilmington Area Hospitality Association hosted the games. The president on the WAHA said it's all about strength in numbers in a tourist based town.
"We take it for granted that we are here at the beach and tourists are always going to be coming, but we are competing with Myrtle Beach, we are competing with the Outer Banks and if we can get together in terms of marketing initiatives, it is just going to help," said Kip Damron, WAHA president.
Teams came from New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties.
"We timed it for the Olympics and this is not Grouse Mountain, but it's a lot better its paradise," said Pat Gilligan, WAHA event organizer.
