John Tavares scored two goals and had two assists to lead the New York Islanders over the Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Tuesday night. P.A. Parenteau and Matt Moulson scored power-play goals to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead after two periods and help New York move two points ahead of Carolina at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Hurricanes sign D Gleason to $16M extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year contract extension worth $16 million. The team said Monday that the deal keeps Gleason under contract through the 2015-16 season. He could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
