WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — The enrollment at Wrightsville Beach Elementary is beyond capacity to the point that the school may have to use other buildings to house students.
On the first day of the school, they were over capacity by more than 100 students. The school is having to set up temporary classrooms in the cafeteria and media center. School officials are also looking into leasing space from Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church to accommodate the extra children.
“We would like to get them off of that, into a more appropriate teaching location, more appropriate environment to receive instruction. So the two classrooms at the church will serve that purpose," said Assistant Superintendent of Planning and Operations Bill Hance.
The school system is trying to get approval from the town of Wrightsville Beach to use the space at the church. Then, the board will have the choice to vote on the matter, possibly at their meeting on Sept. 18.
