WILMINGTON—State Sen. Thom Goolsby is attempting to lower recent tuition hikes at UNCW.

Sen. Goolsby, who represents New Hanover County, said that cutting several non-academic programs can help alleviate the burden on students who now have to pay higher tuition rates.

Starting next fall, tuition will increase by an average of 8.8 percent or about $500 for all UNC system universities. Goolsby is specifically questioning the cost of Chancellor Gary Miller's installation ceremonies and several other administrative personnel.

Goolsby currently serves on the education-higher education committee in the State Senate.
