CHARLOTTE – Voters across North Carolina are casting their ballots Tuesday in a runoff election to decide who will ultimately be on the ballot in November. Second primaries are held when the top finisher fails to get 40 percent of the vote and the second place finisher requests a runoff.

Turnout was a big concern but poll workers at Olde Providence School say it has actually been pretty busy. So far, that polling place has seen 300 voters, a higher number than some expected to see but it is traditionally a busy site, according to poll workers.

However, across the county, board of election officials are saying turnout is still low. They were predicting a 5 to 10 percent turnout, and now they're thinking turnout will come in on the lower end.

But it comes as no surprise. Elections Director Michael Dickerson says with Election Day a month later than usual because of a federal race, turnout is especially light.

“It's the middle of the summer. It's a time when everybody is thinking of vacation and those that aren't have already seen the back-to-school ads on TV, so there are a lot of things occupying your time," he said.
