Protesters marched Monday night against North Carolina's recently-passed Marriage Amendment, saying it violates the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Last week, voters across the state overwhelmingly approved a change to the state constitution defining marriage as being between one man and one woman, which bans the possibility of gay marriage or civil unions. But opponents say despite the vote, the fight against the marriage amendment isn't over.

Fresh off their primary victories, Walter Dalton and Pat McCrory set their sights on each other as the battle for governor is officially underway. While McCrory was in Greensboro talking jobs and his plan to reform the state's tax code, Dalton kicked off his general election campaign with a stop in Charlotte.

The embattled chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party says he's staying on the job after party activists meeting in Greensboro rejected his resignation. Chairman David Parker returned late Saturday to the state Executive Committee meeting, where he said he won't leave. Earlier, he had submitted his resignation, but committee members voted 269-203 to reject it.

The state Democratic party is looking for a fresh start following a scandal at its Raleigh headquarters. The party is choosing a new leader Saturday. The executive committee of the state Democratic party is meeting at the Koury Convention Center Sheraton Hotel in Greensboro. A new leader is expected to emerge from the meeting.
