MCAS-NEW RIVER — A species of bat known as the big brown bat has taken residence in some of the New River Air Station's barracks.
The bats are roosting inside the brickwork during the day and coming out at night to feed on insects. Base wildlife officials say they are monitoring the bat colony before they take any action.
"Just like other mammals, they're out foraging. They have to be able to provide and nurse for their young; so it is that kind of year. Most bats are migratory so it is likely they're going to leave this building and move on," said Camp Lejeune wildlife manager Martin Korenek.
There have been reports of at least one bat getting into a building but no bites or injuries have been reported. Bats can carry a variety of diseases and anyone who comes in contact with one should see a doctor.
