CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were out early Thursday morning making sure everyone stayed safe while wrapping up July 4 holiday celebrations. Hundreds of people filled Memorial Stadium Wednesday night for one of the city's largest events.
CMPD declared the celebration an extraordinary event. The distinction gives police additional powers to search and arrest. It's also intended to keep citizens and law enforcement safe during large events like festivals and protests.
It was the last extraordinary event ahead of the upcoming Democratic National Convention and police say there were no major disruptions and no major arrests.
Wednesday night, thousands of people packed this stadium for the holiday festivities and fireworks. People may have noticed increased police presence and more restrictions on what you could bring into certain areas.
