WAKE FOREST, N.C. – 2011 Miss North Carolina pageant winner, Hailey Best, is one of the guests participating in the USO Golf Tournament in Wake Forest. Military men and women, as well as their families, are invited to play golf to raise money for the USO.
Best describes her participation with the tournament as similar to the experiences of the bagpipers playing the event. “I've seen those bagpipers all year long. We get to know each other. It's kind of the same routine,” said Best. “They play their bagpipes, I sing the national anthem, we take lots of pictures and we thank the families.”
But there's more to being Miss North Carolina than just golf. Best also does fundraisers for the Children's Miracle Network and visits sick children.
“It's my job as Miss North Carolina to visit hospitals, but also to spend time with the kids and get to know them as well,” said Best.
Best has also been in numerous military events, and has even done some training at Fort Bragg.
“There's a lot more to this job than elegant appearances in an evening gown,” said Best. “It's about getting down on your hands and knees and getting dirty with kids at the hospital and making everyone else feel more important than you do.”
The Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant celebrates its 75th anniversary.
