FORT BRAGG -- Eight Fort Bragg soldiers killed in the past 30 days in Afghanistan were honored in a special ceremony Wednesday.

One-by-one these eight men are remembered: Sgt. Jacob Schwallie, Spc. Chase Marta, PFC Dustin Gross, Spc. Samuel Watts, Lt. Jonathan Walsh, PFC Michael Metcalf, Cpl. Benjamin Neal, and PFC Christian SanNicolas.

"There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of these men. With how close we all were, it's something I will always carry with me and it's kind of cliche, but it's like they never are gone,” said Sgt. Timothy Stewart.

They have all been laid to rest by their families and loved ones, so Wednesday was a chance for their unit to pay their respects.

"You know not everybody could make it up to Arlington to go to the funerals--limited mobility moving troops up there--but it's important for everyone to show their respects and final goodbyes to our fallen comrades,” said Sgt. Zachary Spees.

"A lot of people on the outside don't understand what we are going through and they don't understand the brotherhood and camaraderie that soldiers have while they are in, and it's nice to see everybody get together,” said Sgt. Trevor Yascavage.

Knowing they will always be remembered by many brings some comfort.

"I don't know if it is a total measure of closure. I don't think you ever really have closure on some of these events, but it gives us the chance to honor them with their unit, and this is their family away from their family and each and every one of these men are our brothers,” said Lt. Colonel Phillip Sounia.
