Wake County deputies killed a woman after she lunged at them wielding a machete. Officers responded to breaking-and-entering calls at about noon Friday. The woman broke into one residence and threatened the people inside, then broke into another house and refused to come out.

A report from the market research firm IRI says sales of white, granulated sugar are up 15 percent since 2009. Last year, Americans spent nearly $1.7 billion. The increase in white sugar sales comes as Americans shy away from artificial sweeteners. Sales of Splenda are down 40 percent since 2009, the study said, and Sweet'N Low purchases are off 16 percent.

Some of Goldsboro's hotels are totally booked this weekend even despite the cancellation of the Wings Over Wayne Air Show. The International Council of Air Shows says 64 air shows have been canceled all over the world taking a toll on performers and announcers.

Residents near Harris Nuclear Plant said they wish they were better informed about the issue the plant is dealing with. This comes after the southwest Wake County plant was shut down when cracks were found in one of the reactors.

The crossover at the NC General Assembly is complete. State lawmakers had to meet a self-imposed deadline this week to complete all work that began in their own chamber. And by 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the House had sent all of its bills to the Senate and the Senate did the same for the House.

A district court judge heard the case for the Johnston County High School Senior who brought guns on campus in his truck and accepted a plea deal to lower the punishment from a felony to a misdemeanor. Cole Withrow, 18, will now leave the courtroom only having to pay court costs with a misdemeanor charge on his record, yet no probation.

he woman hired to improve the relationship between athletics and academics at UNC Chapel Hill is providing the public with insight about her plans to guide athletes. In May, Dr. Michelle Brown took over the academic support program for student athletes. She plans to examine the student to tutor and counselor and tutor ratio. There are about 800 student athletes.

A bill prohibiting the application of Islamic Sharia law in certain cases has cleared the North Carolina House. The bill passed Thursday would prohibit judges and agencies from applying part of any foreign legal system that would lead to violations of constitutional rights in domestic and child custody cases.

A bill banning private insurers from offering abortion coverage through future online marketplaces has cleared the North Carolina House. The bill also allows any medical professional to refuse to participate in an abortion and prohibits local governments from including abortion in employee health care plans.
