FAYETTEVILLE — High school students tried their hand at prosecuting and defending Saturday during the annual mock trial competition.
Students played the role of attorney or witness while their performance was judged by a set of local attorneys and the judge in the case. Event organizers say the competition teaches students about more than just the legal system.
"It teaches them public speaking, thinking on their feet, analytical thinking, critical thinking and it just really prepares them for whatever they want to do in life and do it well and it makes good citizens," said Mock Trial Regional Coordinator Rebecca Britton.
The mock case for the competition centered around a cyberstalking incident at a fictitious university. Eight regional competitions were held Saturday across the state.
Teams were scored on their performance by local attorneys and judges. One team will advance from each region to the state finals in Raleigh on March 3.
